Trashing the Ducks - Friday of Civil War Week 2003

Civil War week is a real test of patience for me as a Beaver Fan. I have a real problem with fans who don't know what they are talking about. I have found over the years that most Beaver fans, and I say most, have a better grasp on the situation then most Duck fans do. Either that or I have never met a Duck fan that really knows anything about football.

I find that most Duck fans comments are more of a personal attack nature against a player or players then they are a breakdown of the teams and the players. For example, earlier this season while camping before the first home game I was flying all the flags and had all the magnets on the car while camping getting ready to drive to the game from our campsite to the game.

A Duck fan starts in trashing me and the Beavers about the schedule and etc. But when I told him that the Ducks play Mississippi State (which he did not know) and that they finished 0-8 in conference last year, his responce was Aaaaaaaaaaaa????

I find it refreshing to talk with Duck fans who actually have some kind of knowledge of the game and just don't lash out insults at every turn.

The game on Saturday promises once again to be a great football game in a history of great football games between these two teams. The Beavers are favored and are probably the better team this year. However, in the Civil War that is not always enough. But I believe that the Beavers will prevail over the Ducks 31-21.

Exploits of the Day - Monday of Civil War Week

Hello Beaver Fans,

Monday of Civil War week has become somewhat of a tradition with me. First I get my stuffed Oregon Duck mascot to hang from the roof of my house. Then I drive to the Beaver store in downtown Portland for Civil War T-shirt. On the way to the Beaver store I drive by the Duck shop in downtown Portland that is only two blocks from the Beavers store. I pull my big white Explorer with 3 Beaver flags flying and five Beaver car magnets attached into the parking spot in front of the door to the store, roll down the windows and play the first track, which is a sound bite from the 98 Civil War when Jonathan Smith hits Robert Prescott on the slant over the middle to take the lead in the Civil War. The second track is the band playing the OSU fight song.

This year I did not get any reaction from Duck fans because there were none to be found outside the store. I guess they have given up already.

I also have a routine that I do every year during Civil War week. Below is the agenda.

Attire for Monday is Civil War t-shirt from 1999.

Watch the Civil War DVD.

Exploits of the Day - Tuesday of Civil War Week

Attire for Tuesday is Civil War t-shirt from 2000.

Played the video of the 2000 Civil War in Corvallis.

Exploits of the Day - Wednesday of Civil War Week

Played the video of the 2001 Civil War in Eugene.

Exploits of the Day - Thursday of Civil War Week

Trashing the Ducks - Wednesday of Civil War Week 2002

Civil War week is a great time. It is a time that I so look forward to each year. The air is cold, the wind is colder, the trees are bare of leaves and the smell of wet Duck feathers fills the air. It is such a horrible smell that I wonder how anyone can attend that school let alone live in the town.

Each year the supporters of both programs lose all sense of reason and become heated rivals, even if they are best of friends. The few Ducks fans that I know well enough, I don't even hardly speak to this week and I am not even sure I would want to.

The car flags increase in number, the house flags wave proudly and people wear clothing all week that their employers would not let them wear at any other time of the year. I have attended two client meetings this week with Civil War t-shirts on and in both cases the game became the topic of conversation for the majority of the meeting.

The measure of a true rivalry is how much the two schools hate each other, not only this week but the rest of the season. Being Oregonians, we tend to be more polite then people in say the South East. We tolerate each other during the year but loath each other this week. I hate the Ducks all year all but get looked down upon in many cases because I should support the state schools. After all, a Duck fan says to me, "We root for the Beavers during the season". YA RIGHT! I cheer for whomever is playing the Ducks unless a Duck Victory helps the Beavers standings. Even then I have to force myself to rationalize why I would ever cheer for the Ducks. As far as I am concerned, I am supporting the state schools because as I see it there is only 1 state school and it is located in Corvallis. Oregon STATE University.

What Bellotti is thinking right now
Hmmm...if only I had taken that Ohio St. job.

Traveling up for the game, and fellow Beavers, here is why we shall prevail. 1-We're at home 2-We're better than The Ducks, period. If Anderson developed quicker we could have been dangerously good. 3-They can't run without Smith....lot's of picks!! 4-They can't stop Jackson on turf...with 11 in the box. 5-Anderson will play his best game!!!

38-13 Beavs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The cost in gas to drive from Portland to Corvallis and back: $7

The cost to park my car at the game: $5

The "donation" to friends for tailgating items: $15

The price of my ticket in section 27: $45

The price that was offered for my ticket in section 27: $220

Seeing the "national powerhouse" Oregon Ducks and their "first rate program" LOSE to the "lowly Beavers" at Reser, the "high school stadium" on a beautiful fall day in beautiful Corvallis, Oregon.... PRICELESS!

Laughing all game at the ugly new Duck mascot... PRICELESS

Hearing Belloti make up excuses for the loss to the Beavers... PRICELESS

Watching all the arrogant, obnoxious, rude Duck fans go home as losers... PRICELESS

Knowing that the Beavers will have state bragging rights for a whole year and the media hype of the over-rated Ducks will end... PRICELESS

Hearing the whining from Eugene during the entire off-season... PRICELESS

Hello Beaver Fans,

DAY ONE EXPLOITS

What did you do on the first day of Civil War week? I had some real fun. In my outing to go and get a duck to hang from my roof. I had to drive to the Beaver store downtown for some new Beaver stuff. On the way I happen to drive by this green building on 2nd street downtown that sells Duck Junk. Since it is Civil War week and all good Beaver fans during this week drive around playing the "Spirit of OSU" CD in their car, I had an idea. I came to a stop at the intersection in front of the Duck store and there was a parking spot out front. Can you see it coming?? So I pulled by big white Explorer with 3 Beaver flags flying and three Beaver car magnets attached into the parking spot.

If you don't own this CD, you should get it. It has great stuff on it. You can get it on the Alumni Assoc. website. There is a link to it on the Media page of my Beaver site. The first track is a sound bite from the 98 Civil War when Jonathan Smith hits Robert Prescott on the slant over the middle to take the lead in the Civil War. The second track is the band playing the fight song.

So after pulling up in front of the Duck Shop, I rolled down the windows and cranked up the CD to about 9 on the sound meter. The first track got their attention, the second track generated some responses from people coming and going from the store that cannot be mentioned in this newsletter.

Mission accomplished, I completed the two block journey to the Beaver store to complete my shopping. One small step for Beaver Nation, one giant lead for mankind.

Hey Beaver Fans!!!

You we going to let a dirty old Duck get away with talk like this....

From a Duck

"We do not have Onterio Smith, on the verge of a quarterback controversy, play defense with nine players (no cornerbacks), our defensive line can not pressure any quarterback and WE WILL STILL KICK THE BEAVERS BUTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope your car doesn't start, your computer shorts out and you trip over your dog and hit your head so that some sense gets knocked into you, that the only real football team in Oregon is in Eugene."

Scott

I don't think so. The feathered fowl will be plucked on Saturday. Ducks are slow on the ground, fat and ugly. They sometimes fly in the wrong direction and annoy everyone with their constant quacking. Know one likes them except the few delusional souls who are infected with the same waddling, quacking ailment. By the way, I am on my way to the Beaver store to pick up some items, including a duck to hang from my roof.
