BFS Current Story
11-14-2008 - On what turned out to be another wild Saturday of college football, the Oregon State Beavers beat the UCLA Bruins for the first time since the 2000 Fiesta Bowl season and Coach Mike Riley gets his first win over UCLA as a coach. Congrats Mike! The win puts the Beavers one game closer to the conference title and tied with USC for the PAC-10 Title The Beavers looked tight in the first half as they turned the ball over and could not get any points on the board other then a first quarter field goal. In fact the first half had me very worried about how the Beavers were going to fair and I feared that they had let UCLA hang around too long. But those fears were put to rest in the 3rd quarter as the Beavers came out with a mission in the 2nd half and put 14 points on UCLA to take a 17-3 lead. Add another 17 points in the 4th quarter and you have a Oregon State route of UCLA, 34-6. The Rodgers brothers were once again something to watch as Quizz ran for 144 yards on 31 carries and James had 115 yards receiving on 6 catches. Add Sammy Stroughters 93 yards receiving to that and you have a route. The real bright spot of the game was the punting, yes I said the punting. Johnny Hekker, who has been getting booed all season for his punting, came out and showed what he can do. Hekker punted 5 times for an average punt of 48.8 yards with a long of 59 yards and pinned UCLA inside the 20 twice. Congrats Mr. Hekker. Another great performance was that was Sean Canfield. Canfield started his first game in a year and was 16 of 22 for 222 yards. 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Sean did a great job of controling the tempo of the game and not making any big mistakes. In the second half he looked real comfortable in the pocket and led the team to a victory. It looks good for the Beavers to have to quarterbacks who can come in and not miss a beat with the offense. BY THE NUMBERS
The Beavers dominated the stats and also won in the kicking game and special teams which might be a first for this season. Let's hope the kicking game continues its improved play as we hit the stretch run. The Beavers are now 3 games from winning their pac-10 title since 2000 and going to their first Rose Bowl since 1965. Next up is Cal at Reser on Saturday. Cal gave USC and real game last week at USC and the Beavers need to be prepared for this game. There are no more easy wins for the Beavers. They will have to earn that Rose Bowl berth if they want to go. GO BEAVERS! BFS |
