BFS Current Story Beavers Start 2007 Season With Victory Over Utah Hurray! Its finally football season. I love football season. Every month of it has its own special character that brings something special to the game. The early season games have warm days, shirt sleeves and shorts or the occasional thunderstorm. Night games you start to feel that little bit of chill in the air that hints of things to come. The Beavers opened their 2007 football season with a win over Utah 24-7. It was not a pretty win by any means. Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevao shared minutes at quarterback and both quarterbacks struggled only completing 40% of their passes and each throwing an interception. There has been a quarterback controversy since spring camp with both qb's fighting for the starting spot. From my perspective Canfield ran the offense better and they looked sharper when Canfield was in. Canfields arm strength appears better then Moevaos'. There appeared to be timing issues with the qb's and their receivers all night. The absence of Sammy Stroughter was very evident. A bright spot of the game was freshman James Rodgers. Rodgers has some good speed and shocked Utah with his speed on end arounds. Yvensen Bernard returned for his senior season and started it off with a bang. Rushing for 165 yards on 29 carries. I expect Bernard to be the work horse of this offense until the quarterbacks and receivers can get on the same page. The defense looked outstanding as always in shutting down a good Utah team that comes into this game after going to a bowl game in 2006. Utah was held to only 18 yards rushing for the game and had negitive yards for most of the game. Utah helped out the Beavers by losing QB and starting running back early in the game. Utah appeared to have some momentum going early in the game with a long touchdown pass, but after their QB went down in the 2nd down and was replaced by the senior backup who looked strong but not ready for play. All in all it is a victory to start the season but I came away from the game with some uneasy feelings about the QB situation. You can tell that both are not making the correct reads and are impatient in the pocket. They say that teams experience the most improvement from game 1 to game 2. The Beavers are going to need every bit of that improvement as they next travel to Cincinnati to face a Bearcats team that is much improved over last years International Bowl Champions. Cincinnati is a dark horse to contend for the Big East Title. Hopefully Canfield and Moevao can become more settled in the passing game by next week or it could get ugly early. BY THE NUMBERS
