OUCH ! Part 2 - Beavers Lose Game and Possibly Canfield

A disappointing game for many reasons on Saturday as the Beavers lose to USC 24-3 in Los Angeles. A bigger concern may be the injury to Sean Canfield. Canfield was injured on a late hit after running for 18 yards in the forth quarter for a first down. He was hit as he slid feet first on his throwing shoulder, driving it up and back. He left the game and was replaced by Moevao for the rest of the game.

This season has been a test of endurance for the Beavers as loss after loss for many reasons, keep piling up. Punters, Wide Receivers, Offensive Linemen, Defensive Linemen, Defense Backs, Running Backs. The Beavers have lost players at all those positions for all or part of the season this year. It is one of the worst years for injuries in my memory. We can only hope that Bernard and Canfield will both be back for the final home game next week vs Washingon. More on that later in the week.

At USC the Beavers defense played a great game holding USC to only 287 yards total offense and 100 yards rushing. USC had been averaging over 400 yards per game in total offence and almost 200 yards per game in rushing offense. Another bright spot on the team has been the improved performance of Kicker/Punter Alexis Serna. The last two weeks Serna has averaged 40 per punt and is 4 for 5 in field goals.

But the offense continues to struggle. Last week vs Stanford the Beavers managed only 315 yards of offense and this week, with Bernard watching from the bench, the Beavers could not move the ball at all. The Beavers offense has only 176 yards of total offense for the game and only 85 yards passing. With this kind of offensive production, things do not look good for the Beavers with 2 very winable games coming up the next two weeks. The Beavers must win one of those two games to become bowl elegible or face the possibility of having to win at #3 rank Oregon to make it to a bowl game.

As disappointing as this season has been at times, for the Beavers to make it to a bowl game would be huge for these players. The Beavers graduate many quality seniors this season including Evensen Bernard who will most likely end up second on the all time rushing list at Oregon State. The bowl game will also allow the Beavers to get much needed playing time for their young quarterbacks and receivers to build for next year. With all the injuries and turmoil that this team has gone through, it would be a something special for them to finish in the top have of the PAC-10 at 7-5 with 2 more wins.

Of course, that will depend upon the status of Bernard and Canfield this week and whether they will be able to play come Saturday.
