BFS Current Story Beavers Win Game but Lose Bernard (Maybe) The Beavers did they needed to do and beat a lesser team last weekend in Corvallis. The Stanford Cardinal came into the game as 13 point underdogs and left the game with a 17 point loss. With the win the Beavers are now tied with USC for 4th place in the PAC-10 conference only two games behind leaders ASU and Oregon. The win also got the Beavers within one game of becoming bowl eleligable for the 7th time in the last 9 years. The Beavers used their dominate rush defense to shut down Stanfords ground attack, holding Cardinal to -8 yards rushing for the game. That along with a stingy pass defense that had 2 interceptions held Stanford without a touchdown and only 2 field goals for the game. For the third game in a row Sean Canfield did not throw an interception while throwing for 1 touchdown. After a terrible start, Canfield has improved his season stats to 8 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The learning curve with Sean seems to be to allow him to continue to improve his understanding of the offense and make the correct reads while being somewhat conservative on offense and not allowing the big turnover that hurts the team. It seems to be working because since Sean has been on his current streak of 3 games without an interception, the Beavers have won 3 in a row as well. All in all it was a good weekend for the Beavers. But with the win came a downside, Bernard left the game in the second quarter with an unknown shoulder injury. As of today, the latest word is that Bernard is day to day and a decision on whether he will play on Saturday in Los Angeles will be made on Thursday of this week. If Bernard cannot play on Saturday the job of carrying the ball will fall to senior tailback Matthew Sieverson of Bend or senior tailback Clinton Polk. It was Polk who last season stepped in for an injured Bernard against USC and ran for over 100 yards in defeating the #3 Trojans in Corvallis. So the table is set for this weekends game at USC. The Trojans have been struggling of late, losing two of three. But they should have starting QB John David Booty back in the lineup this weekend. The Beavers need to go down to USC and do something that they have not been able to do in 47 years, win a game vs USC in Los Angeles. A win vs USC this weekend would do several things. It would make the Beavers bowl elegible, it would move the Beavers into 4th place all alone and possibly into a tie for 3rd. BY THE NUMBERS
