BEAVERS WIN THE EMERALD BOWL 21-14 OVER MARYLAND

12-28-2007

The Oregon State Beavers football team won its 4th bowl game in a row by beating the University of Maryland 21-14 in the Emerald Bowl. With the win the Beavers hold the longest bowl win streak in the PAC-10 at 4 games. The Beavers finished 9-4 and have won 7 of 8 games down the stretch for the second year in a row. The last two seasons the Beavers started 2-3 and finished 10-4 and 9-4 after the slow starts.

Bernard rushes for 177 yards and Rogers addes 115 yards on 15 carries and 40 receiving yards as the Beavers overcome 3 turnovers and an injury to Lyle Moevao to Beat Maryland. The Beavers defense held Maryland to 224 total yards and just 19 yards rushing for the game. The Beavers defense gave up one long pass play in the first half but then shut down Maryland in the second half allowing only 2 yards rushing threw 3 quarters.

It was very clear that the Beavers were the best team on the field and dominated the Terrapins, but the Beavers offense kept Maryland in the game with another lack luster performance. The only bright spot on offense was Bernard who moved up 4 spots on the PAC-10 all time rushing list to 6th and is now the 2nd all time rusher in Oregon State history behind Ken Simonton.

But the real star of the Emerald bowl was the Beavers defense. The Beavers held Maryland to 19 yards rushing and finished the season #1 in the nation in rushing defense. After a quick startand scoring 14 points in the 1st quarter, Maryland could never get back on track as the Beavers defense shut down the run and forced Maryland to throw the ball on a wet and rainy day.

The Beavers offense did what it could and put together 3 scoring drives of 80 yards, 68 yards and 36 yards.

The Beavers finished the 2007 season 9-4 overall and should be ranked in the top 25 after the bowl games finish up. If they do, it will be the second year in a row the Beavers finished with 9 or more wins and ranked in the top 25. Mike Riley did a great job this year adjusting the team to the players he had available and coming up with game plans that worked for the personal. The PAC-10 conference should select its coach of the year awards after the bowl games are finished. If they did it that way, Mike Riley would have a couple awards by now.

The season is now over and we look forward to spring ball and the new faces we will see on the field. I would like to thank all the seniors who have now finished their careers at Oregon State. I have enjoyed watching you over the years and I wish you good fortune and happyness in our future careers and lives.

GO BEAVERS!
