Beavers Hire Craig Robinson 4-7-2008 - The Oregon State Men's Basketball program has a new head coach and it is Craig Robinson. Robinson comes to Corvallis from Brown University and is coming off a season where his Brown team won 19 games, was 11-3 in the Ivy League. Both Brown University records. He was voted Ivy League Coach of the Year. He was a two time Ivy League Player of the Year while attending Princeton University and played the last two college basketball games of his career in Gill Coliseum in taking Princeton to the NCAA tournament as a player. This morning in my blog I stated that I did not feel Robinson was the right man for the job at Oregon State. But after listening to him this afternoon and this evening on Fox I may have to reconsider that statement. Robinson seems very intelligent and articulate. He seems like the type of person who will work with players to make them not only better players but better people as well. Sometime things happen for a reason. I talked a year ago about how Oregon State needed a new coach who would bring some excitement and interest back to Beaver Basketball. Well it is not what I was thinking but Coach Robinson might just be that type of person. He already has people talking and as the 2008 Men's Basketball program swings into action next November we might just be looking at the Brother in Law of the President of the United States of America coaching our basketball team. Talk about a coach having security guards. As a member of the Presidents family he will have secret service for protection and he might have that already. So I will retract my statement from earlier today and wait to see if this person who seemed to come out of the woodwork can get the job done at Oregon State. I can tell you this for sure. I will renew my season tickets this summer. Welcome to Oregon State University, Coach Robinson, I hope you can bring the glory back to Oregon State Basketball.
A Little Oregon State Basketball History When I was attending Oregon State the basketball program was 6th in the nation in victories and held that position until 1990 when Jimmy Anderson made his run at head coach after Ralph Millers retirement. Anderson ran the program into the ground and every coach since that day has continued to heap dirt on top of the grave. Below is a list of the past OSU coaches and their career of season by season records.
Through the 2004 season the Beavers had dropped to 13th winningest program in college history (1529 wins) and continue to fall. Considering that Princeton, Illinois, Western Kentucky and Washington were all within 50 wins of the Beavers, I expect that we have fallen even more. Perhaps even out of the top 20. Arizona was 21st, 69 wins behind us. Lets hope Coach Robinson can get us back into the top 10. GO BEAVERS! BFS |
