BFS Current Story
1-27-2008 - It felt more like the games of old. A nice crowd of over 8,200 was on hand for the Beavers home game against #7 UCLA and former Lake Oswego stand-out Kevin Love. The crowd was into the game and the Beavers put on a first half performance that kept the crowd in the game. At one point in the first half the Beavers had come back from as far as 8 points down to take the lead 32-31 just before the half. At half time, the fans were on their feet cheering and clapping to the fight song. The pep band was all dressed in format attaire and playing loud and proud. There was a buzz in legendary Gill and it felt more like the old days when this was a regular occurance. The Beavers football team came out at halftime to show off the 2007 Emerald Bowl Trophy. It was a night of star and future star watching. Jacquizz Rodgers, James Rodgers little brother was there. CJ Giles was spotted in the stands. Members of the baseball team were there. Gill was buzzing and the conditions were perfect for Oregon State to get the monkey off their backs and upset the Bruins. Unfortunetly for the Beavers, at halftime the Bruins realized that as well and came out in the second half and put a whoopen on the Beavs with a 17-3 run to blow the game open 60-42. After that the excitment was gone, the fans were leaving and the game became just like the previous home games and the result was a 23 point loss to the Bruins. Highlights of the game were a stumbling Josh Tarver tossing the ball into the air as he faces plants on the court only to see the go off the glass and in. UCLA had several crowd pleasing lobs for dunks and the Beavers had a rather unspectacular slam dunk that missed. OH! and our new temporary head coach was Tee'd up when he did not like the way the calls were going. In fact the game was called so poorly that at one point in the first half the Bruins were 21-24 from the line and the Beavers were 3-4. For the night the Bruins were 28-36 from the line and the Beavers were 13-18. The big crowd mostly came to watch the stars from UCLA and Kevin Love and Darren Collison did not disappoint them. Love finished the game with a workman like 16 points and 21 rebounds on 6-11 shooting. Collison lit up the Beavers going 9-12 from the field, 2-3 from 3 point range and 13-13 from the line for 33 points, a career high. The Beavers have now tied the record for the longest losing streak in school history at 10 games and face the challenge of trying to stop the streak on the road at Oregon next saturday. Perhaps Oregon State fans should try and get tickets for the game in Eugene. They will probably be witnessing history.
