Beaver Men's Basketball Faces Another Challenge

1-10-2008 - The Oregon State Men's Basketball team is coming off 2 losses in Arizona last weekend. 76-63 to the University of Arizona and 72-53 to Arizona State.

The Beavers led the Arizona Wildcats for the first 28.5 minutes of the game tonight and still lost by 13 points. Once again the Beavers played well for most of a game only to come up short and lose. This time the Beavers had a 7 point lead and then went nearly 4 minutes while scoring just 2 points in the second half to give up the lead. At ASU, the Beavers were never in the game from the start, trailed by 8 at the half and were quickly down by 14 at the start of the 2nd half.

This weekend the Beavers face #23 Stanford (12-2) on Thursday night and Unranked Cal (10-3) at Gill. The Oregon State Basketball program has hit rock bottom and is quickly closing in on its 17th losing season in the last 18 years.

With 2 losses this weekend and #4 Washington State on the road next week the Beavers will sit at 6-11 with 13 conference games left in the season. They are 0-2 in conference now and should be 0-5 after the next three games with 13 left. They means they would have to go 10-3 over the last 13 games to finish with a winning record for the year. Those 13 games include at Oregon, at Stanford, at UCLA, at Washington. If they win all the home games in that 13 game stretch on lose all the road games they would go 7-6. That means winning on the road. The USC game might be the easiest road game left on the schedule.

So for the Beavers to have any kind of reasonable or logical chance at having a winning season they have to win both games at home this weekend. WOW! Good Luck with that.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Same comment, different day, different week. Below is the comment I made before last weeks games and I find it still applies to this weeks games. The Beavers shot 33% and 40% from the field and 60% and 72% from the line last week. Which is an improvement from previous games. The Beavers will have to come out at home and play the best games of the year for them to have a chance to win. I will be at the Cal game on saturday and will most likely be the only one cheering and standing as the Beaver fans on my side only sit and clap politely. They even get mad at you if you stand up. But hey, with the way the team is playing, who wants to spend the energy to stand and cheer only to have them lose again.

My prediction for this weekend is the Beavers go 0-2 and lose by at least 10 in both games. But I will be cheering my team on every game and hopefully something will change soon to bring back the glory days of Beaver Basketball.

Previous Weeks Comment

The Beavers need a new coach. Jay John has had 5 years and has not gotten the job done. He has a solid group of players who just will not play in a manner that will win games and that is the coaches fault. This is not youth summer ball. We are not playing over our heads. We are a PAC-10 conference team with talented young men on the roster who are not getting the job done.

It will be a miracle if the Beavers win a game this weekend. But I will watch just the same and probably turn the game off sometime in the second half when they are shooting 50% from the line 35% from the field and have just gone 7 minutes without scoring.

Good Luck Beavs, you'll need it.

GO BEAVERS!
