GAME 4 - Boise State Broncos

Well Beaver Fans .... How are you feeling this week? This week for me has been filled with anxiety as this weeks game approaches. I cannot seem to get the game out of my head. It is the same kind of feeling I have before Fresno State. In other words, this is a very very good football team and one that people who don't pay attention to football think the Beavers should win easily just because we are a PAC-10 team and they are a lowly WAC team. Well to the best of my knowledge the BIG-12 conference is a pretty good conference too. Well Boise State defeated Iowa State in the Humanitarian Bowl last year 34-16. BSU's starting QB Ryan Dinwiddie completed 17-of-32 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. They finished the season 12-1 and are currently in the middle of a 13 game winning streak. Pretty good football team.

This years Boise State team does not have some of their playmakers from last years team but they are once again loaded with talent. They are 2-0 this season with wins over Idaho State 62-0 and Idaho 24-10. The Washington State Cougars defeated Idaho in their season opener 24-0 and WSU is proving to be a good team.

BSU's starting QB Ryan Dinwiddie is 31-55-0 for 400 yards in two games. Starting RB David Mikell has 334 yards on 40 carries for a 167.0 yards per game average in two games.

Boise States Head Coach Dan Hawkins was recruited by Oregon State for the Head Coaching job before giving the job to Riley. Hawkins record as a head coach is 59-16-1.

BY THE NUMBERS

In looking at the numbers of the two teams this season, Boise State has the advantage in many areas over the Beavers. Scoring Offense, Scoring Defense, Rushing Offense, Rushing Defense, Total Offense, Total Defense, Turnover Ratio, Punt Return Average and Kickoff Return Average. Granted that Boise State has not played the cream of the crop this season for a team that finished 2002 season in the top 20 in the nation in all polls. The Beavers have their work cut out for them. This is a team that defeated Fresno State in Boise last season 67-21. But the Beavers crushed Fresno State last season in Corvallis 59-19.

For the Beavers to win this game the defense has to continue to play as well as it has in the first three games and the offense has to maintain control of the ball. The Beavers have lost the turnover battle in all three games this season and cannot do that against a team like Boise State. Boise State is very balanced on offense so the Beavers will not be able to cheat by stacking the line of defense or they will pass it over the line.

With Steven Jackson a question mark and Brandon Browner probably out for the game. The Beavers are already filling holes in the team after only three games. This is a real test for this team. They had better be ready or they will loose.

Derek Anderson has to make correct decisions and make good throws, it would help if Kenny Farley can run correct routes and other receivers not drop passes. This game can be the springboard to a solid season or the quicksand that sucks the team down. Lets hope that the Beavers come out to play.

WHO TO WATCH FOR BOISE STATE

  • QB - Ryan Dinwiddie
  • RB - David Mikell
  • WR - Jerry Smith
  • WR - Tim Gilligan

FOR THE BEAVERS

  • Derek Anderson - Can he put together a solid game with no interceptions
  • Steven Jackson - How is his knee? Can he play at all without risking further injury
  • Mike Hass - Becoming a star receiver
  • James Newson - Needs to have a huge game
  • Dwight Wright - The ball may rest in his hands if Jackson cannot play.
  • Ryan Cole - Same as Dwight Wright.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Get their early Beaver fans and get Reser Stadium rocking. The Beavers will need the home field advantage in a big way to get through this game with a win. Look for Jackson to play limited minutes and Ryan Cole to carry the ball much more. Dwight Wright will carry the most and he will have 100+ yards on the ground. If Jackson does not play Boise State will not play the rush as hard and provide more openings for Wright to run the ball.

Look for Anderson to have a good game. I saw some fire in his eyes last week and I think he knows it is up to him to get it done. He will raise to the occasion and have a good game.

FINAL SCORE

Beavers 28
Broncos 17
