BFS Story Archive BEAVERS CRUSH THE STANFORD CARDINAL 43-3, BRING ON THE DUCKS Mike Riley had his team prepared and a solid game plan going into Saturdays game with a Stanford team coming off two straight victories and a Stanford team that had guaranteed a win earlier in the week. Don't these young men know by now that guaranteeing a win only works for Joe Nameth. In college ball all it does is fired up the other side. The weather was cold and wet, but not to cold and not to wet. However, Mike Rileys game plan was smoken hot and his team put it to good use. Derek Anderson was 25 of 47 for 379 yards on 4 touchdowns with only 1 interception. Steven Jackson went for 152 yards on 22 carries and 1 touchdown. James Newson caught 9 passes for 115 yards and Tim Euhus caught 6 passes for 61 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sounds pretty good right! Well who do you think was player of the game? If those numbers were great then his numbers were outstanding. Mike Hass won player of the game honors by catching 8 passes for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns. His 2 touchdown catches were for 52 yards and 53 yards and happened only six minutes apart in the game. And those catches were not even his best catches. His best catch of the day came on an 13 pass to the left side in the second quarter that was behind Hass who twisted his body around to make a spectacular catch. The Beavers defense stuffed the Cardinal offense all day long. Stanfords QB's were sacked 5 times and spent most of the afternoon on their backs. Stanfords backup quarterback took a punishing hit in the third quarter when he went on a option play around the left side and was nailed by Siegler just as he pitched the ball that left the crowd in awe and his head spinning for some time. They replayed the hit on the big screen several times. In all the Beavers defense was outstanding, holding Stanford to -4 yards rushing on the day and 92 yards in total offense. Next up are the Ducks and it is Civil War week. No need to hype this one, it has a life of its own. This Saturdays game is a huge one for the Beavers in more then just the Civil War. The Beavers have two games left and one of those is at USC. That game will be very tough, so the Beavers absolutely have to win at Oregon. When the Beavers beat Oregon that will move them into position to finish no worse then tied for third in the PAC-10, with a chance to finished tied for second or even tied for first with some help from the Huskies and a win at USC. But a loss at Oregon could move the Beavers all the way down to sixth place. So come on Beaver fans, let get this team ready to play and fired up for a big win at Oregon. GO BEAVERS!
