GAME 1 POSTGAME - SACRAMENTO STATE HORNETS

The Beavers defeated the Sacramento State Hornets 40-7 in front of the 17th straight sell-out at Reser Stadium last Thursday evening.

It was a great start to the fall for me. I traveled to the game from our family camp site up at Detroit Lake. The weather all week at the lake was perfect for camping. Mid eighties, lite winds, perfect. The only issue we had camping was the smoke hanging over the lake and valleys from the forest fires in Central Oregon.

Traveling to the game with great expectation and seeing the stadium once again filled with people was a great site. I really enjoy going to games at OSU and can think of little else that I enjoy as much. Perhaps it is a sign of how much I miss and enjoyed the great time I had there as a student in the late 70's.

The Beavers game plan was obvious right from the start. Jackson right, Jackson Left, Jackson Screen. Riley wanted to establish the rushing game and he did just that. Jackson rushed for 129 yards on 23 carries, but in addition to that, backups Dwight Wright (76yrds/11 carries)and Ryan Cole (30 yards/ 6 carries) carried the ball well and the three combined for 226 yards on the ground.

Derrick Anderson looked a little more stable at quarterback. He still had some problems over throwing his receivers and his receivers still had problems hanging onto the ball. Kenny Farley had two catches for 51 yards but dropped several that could have broke the game open early.

The big surprise to those who don't follow Oregon High School football was Mike Hass. Mike stepped into the starting spot one hour before the game when James Newson could not play with a hip pointer. Hass had 6 catches for 129 yards and his first touchdown as a Beaver. Of course if you followed high school ball a couple of years ago you would have seen Mike making touchdowns all the time.

The good thing about the game was the play of the Beavers defense. They first team defense held the Hornets scoreless and the Beavers backups only gave up one touchdown after the Beavers fumbled a punt deep in Beaver territory.

All in all I thought it was a good start for the Beavers and I look forward to next weeks game against Fresno State. That game will be a real test for the Beavers who have to travel down to Fresno where they have never won a game in 5 trys.
