BFS Story Archive BEAVERS DON'T WANT IT AS MUCH AS THE DUCKS DO AND LOSE THE 107TH CIVIL WAR 34-20 IN EUGENE I know I have said this before and I know I am not Mike Riley of any other high paid college coach. But I have been coaching kids in basketball, baseball and now softball for years and the one thing that I always tell my teams is this. Keep your mouths shut and let your play on the field express your thoughts. Remember what you practice and put it into play on the field. Play 110% for the entire game and never ever give up. The Beavers played like I have seen before and hope never to see again. We have this game in the bag. Give lots of credit to the Ducks, they showed us how to play a game. They played with heart, they played with purpose and they never gave up. Steven Jackson might want to reconsider going to the NFL next season. Big time players come through in the big time games. Jackson did none of the above. Jackson rushed for 68 yards on 18 carries, he also was the leading receiver with 7 catches for 71 yards. However, in the middle of all that he dropped several passes, one of which would have gone for a touchdown. I am also concerned about his field vision. Several times in the game there were huge holes to the right or left side of the line and he went in the opposite direction for no gain or a loss of yards. If he thinks these holes close fast, just what does he think will happen in the NFL. The running game seems to take forever to develop when run. You watch it on TV and say, "here comes a run" and it just seems like they are moving in slow motion. Now if it looks that way to me, it must be pretty easy for the other team to sniff out a running play. It just seems that when Simonton was here, the running plays developed much faster and the backs hit the holes a lot faster then Jackson is. Yes our offensive line is not as good as the Fiesta Bowl team. In fact they are not a very good offensive line at all. And that may be the real problem. In games where they can handle the other team, we can run the ball. When they cannot , we don't. The Ducks defensive line played a great game and the much maligned Duck secondary played very well Vs our big receivers. The fact is that the Ducks outplayed us in just about all areas of the game. Seigler had better learn to keep his big mouth shut from now on. But now it is a little late for that. Another area of concern is the fact that the Ducks could so easily run the ball on us when we had been able to stop the run all season. I think a big factor in that equation was the play of Clemens. He kept the defense honest and when he had the opening he ran the ball for first downs in key situations. The lack of discipline on this team is very frustrating and they had better shape up in a hurry. We have USC in two weeks on national TV. If they don't figure something out quickly it will be like Custer at the little big horn. Another promising season has passed by, and another chance to compete for a conference title is gone. Yes we can sit back and say "we have a winning season and are going to a bowl game" and yes that is a positive. But this team has to much talent on it to settle for the Las Vegas Bowl. Now we all know just how the Ducks felt last season when they had to settle for the Seattle Bowl after a promising start. I think the Beavers will continue to be competitive in the PAC-10 and continue to have winning seasons. But how long will it be before we can once again get back to the top of the conference and go to the Rose Bowl. The Cougars have done it without a big stadium or world class facilities, why not us. All I can do as a fan and supporter of Oregon State University sports is to continue to go to games and give my dollars to the University in support of the programs. That what it takes to build a winner. Fans who will support the program. Look at the Ducks, 58,000+ at the game on Saturday, packed houses for basketball games. Now look at the Beavers, we struggle to fill 35,500 seats at Reser and we get 2,500 for basketball games. The school needs our support, win or lose in order to build great facilities and programs. Unfortunatly we do not have an alum that owns a billion dollar corporation to help us build sports complexs. We have to do it the old fashioned way. With our support. As for the players, we as fans would like to see more discipline and effort on the field and a little less talk off the field. Be classy and give it all you've got and you will be successful. Good game Ducks, see you next year in Corvallis. GO BEAVERS!
