GAME 2 POSTGAME - FRESNO STATE BULLDOGS

BEAVERS LET THE BULLDOGS GET TO THEM IN 16-14 LOSS AT FRESNO STATE

In one of the ugliest football games I have ever seen an Oregon State football team play. I am almost beyond words to express how ticked off and majority upset I am at how our team performed once again in the National spotlight. If I were a player on this team I would be embarrassed by what happened and would be busting butt to make sure it never happens again.

For a team to get inside the 30 four times and inside the inside the 10 twice and come out with no points is amazing especially when you have a kicker of the quality of Yliniemi. The offensive line did a poor job in the red zone blocking for the pass or the run. You have first and goal at the 4 with Steven Jackson in the backfield and come out with nothing. If Riley is not chewing some butts today in the film room he should be fired. And Riley should be kicking himself today for not kicking the field goal again after it was blocked late in the game. That field goal would have given the Beavers a 4 point lead and not just 1.

And what is it with all the penalties. For the second week in a row the Beavers had over 100 yards in penalties. The Beavers gave away the game on penalties as much as they did in their play. Personal Fouls and costly execution errors at key moments in the game cost the Beavers this game. The first of many key penalties was in the first quarter when the Beavers had 3rd and inches, made the first down only to have it called back on a procedure penalty. The next play on 3rd and 5, Anderson threw his first interception of the game. Late in the second quarter the Beavers gave the Bulldogs 30 yards in personal foul penalties that led to a field goal with 6 seconds to go in the half.

Once again Derrick Anderson crumbled under the pressure of a big game and did not do what quality quarterbacks do. Make the big play when he had to. For the second time in his career he threw for 5 interceptions. Perhaps next week he should be on the bench at the start of the game and let Adam Rothenfluh get a start in his career. Perhaps it might shake something loose in that head of Anderson.

Give Fresno State credit on wanting the win more then the Beavers did. They played hard and their quarterback, Jeff Grady, sucked it up and showed some real guts late in the game when he was hurting and led his team down the field for a game winning field goal. Derrick Anderson could only throw and interception at the 10 yard line with a chance to put the game away. Size and strength is obviously not everything that makes a quarterback. You must have guts and brains. I am very afraid that Anderson has neither.

Fresno State did a great job in pass coverage as I said in the pregame. They have some very talented defensive backs and they did just what I was afraid of. They shut down Newson and other receivers with their coverage and made it a long day for the Beavers.

The bright spot for the Beavers was the play of their defense. They kept the Beavers offense in the game almost long enough for them to pull out the victory. It was only a couple of times that they broke down and allowed Fresno the big play. Unfortunately one of those times was the last drive when they let Bernard Berrian get behind them for 32 yards that cost them the game.

Now what? One loss does not break a season. It all comes down to how the players respond to this defeat and what they can learn from it. If they come out of the game with a dedication to improving and learning from their mistakes, then they have a chance at having a great season. If they don't, then it may be a long season in deed.
