BFS Story Archive GAME 4 POSTGAME - BOISE STATE BRONCOS Hello Beaver Fans ! I have just returned from my weekly Beaver postgame cardiac stress test and now have a few minutes to write this message. The good news is my heart is still good. My doctor recommended that I start taking this precautionary measure in 1999 after the Georgia Southern game and strongly urged it after the Eastern Washington game in 2000. But it wasn't until the 2001 game in Fresno that I started to think my doctor was correct. But still, that male macho ego of mine kept me from taking her advise. Well after another trip to Fresno this season, I have finally taken her advise and she also recommends that the next time the Beavers play a WAC team, that I should not reschedule that root canal or stay home and due my taxes instead of going to the game. She said it would be less stressful on my heart. I felt as if I were watching a DVD of "The Matrix" and the Beaver players were bending over backwards in slow motion while dodging bullet after bullet. And I knew for sure it was some sort of cosmic intervention when Kenny Farley caught a pass at a key moment in the game. Then time did move in slow motion as I watched Derek Anderson dive over for the first down only to lose the ball. The moment was frozen in time as all the air was sucked out of Reser stadium and I was seeking my doctors cell phone number. But thanks to what in my opinion was a very poor officiating crew, they once again made the wrong call and time began again. The air returned to our lungs and we all breathed a great big sigh of relief. The Beavers could run out the clock and seal a 26-24 victory over a very very good team in Boise State. All in all the Beavers offense played a very good game in just about every area except red zone efficiency. In 18 trips inside the 20 this season the Beavers have only scored 10 TD's and only two 6 tries on Saturday. The Beavers also failed to win the turnover battle for the four straight game this season. The Beavers are last in the PAC-10 in turnover margin at -5. Also the Beavers once again pilled up the penalties with 14 penalties for 146 yards. A couple of those calls were controversial but also several were just plain stupid actions on the part of the players. They need to learn to control themselves and not make the stupid mistake. The Beavers are last in the PAC-10 in penalties with a 108.8 yards per game average. Aside from those factors the offense played a solid game in a game that they had to if they were going to win the game. They controlled the clock and made some big plays. Derek Anderson threw no interceptions for the first time since last seasons Civil War game in Corvallis and was over 50% in completion's for the second game in a row. Derek Anderson leads the PAC-10 in passing yards per game with a 299.8 average. Steven Jackson, playing on a sore knee, rushed for 122 on 30 carries. It was his 4th straight this season with over 100 yards and he leads the PAC-10 in rushing with 545 yards and an average of 136.2 yards per game. James Newson also had a big game with 9 catches for 208 yards. Newson leads the PAC-10 in receiving yards per game with 142.0 yards per game. The Beavers defense played a good game against the run but gave up several big plays to the long ball and also a punt return for a TD. The Beavers defense has slipped this year from its lofty position of previous years and is fourth in total defense in the PAC-10. Now that the conference schedule is starting, the Beavers defense must step up as well. Boise State is a very good football team. Look for them to win the WAC again this season. Their two hardest games left on their schedule should be Fresno in Fresno and Hawaii in Hawaii. Ryan Dinwiddie is a great quarterback and will most likely be playing in the NFL next season. Several times during the game he made big plays to his receivers and running from the pocket just when the Beavers seem to have him fenced in. Next up for the Beavers this weekend at home is Arizona State. They are coming off a humiliating loss at Iowa where they only scored 2 points. They will be looking for some retribution and the Beavers stand in their way. The Beavers will have to play better on defense next week to stop ASU's potent offense. GO BEAVERS!
