2002 Football OSU vs Stanford BEAVERS COME BACK FROM A 21-3 HOLE TO BEAT STANFORD 31-21 Once again, it is a great day to be a Beaver. I would like to take credit for two things. First my prediction of the final score on Friday of 31-17 Beavers. Almost nailed it. Second for the heart felt halftime speech that I gave to a bored worker at GI Joe's on Saturday as I was shopping with my daughter for new basketball shoes. With headset radio on, I was listening intently to the game as the Beavers misfired all over the place in the first half. There were times I thought I was listening to a replay of the Husky game in Seattle. It was so frustrating to listen to I had to remove my headset from time to time in order to keep from screaming out loud in the store. As the first half came mercifully to an end, the Beavers were down 21-6 to a team that they should be blowing out. The radio account showed a team in turmoil with no direction. As I removed the headset a sales person asked if I was listening to the game. Since I was wearing Beaver clothing head to toe with a headset on my head, I found this to be a silly question. My answer, well yes I am. He asked how they were doing. To which he proceeded to receive the full force of my frustration. I talked to him like I was talking to the team. About how they were better then this. About how they were loaded with potential and capable of great things if only they could play with the intensity, desire and heart. How this season they had become a team with no heart. Not showing the heart and capability of a champion. How a champion would never give up and find ways to win when down. How the defense had to step it up a notch and shut down Stanford in the second half. How the offense had to show some heart and battle back from adversity. It was classic stuff. Other shoppers in the area were staring at me. Not sure who I was or why I was expounding lines from "Remember the Titans" or some other great football movie. It felt good. My daughter, embarrassed at her fathers lecture in the shoe department, insisted we exit the store with no shoes in hand. Well there must have been some sort of cosmic connection between Tualatin Oregon and Stanford, because the Beavers came out in the second half and played with heart and fire. The defense shut out Stanford in the second half and the Beavers took only one play at the start of the third quarter to get right back into the game. And 30 minutes later the Beavers had pulled off the improbable comeback. Outscoring the Cardinal 25-0 to come out of Stanford with the 31-21 victory. The other big story from the game was about some people I know. I was going to make the trip down for the game with four friends from church. However I played good Dad and stayed home to go to my daughters play. Anyway, my four friends had quite the trip. Paul, my Pastor, and my friend Scott, upon entering the stadium were asked if they would mind running the first down markers on the visitors side of the field for the game. When the official was asking about my friends Jack and Bill, because they were all sitting together. The official gave them all field passes and the two ran the first down markers for the whole game. In watching the video replay today, I was amazed to see the smiling faces of Paul and Scott working the chain gang and having an experience of a lifetime. Paul and Scott both attended Stanford and Scott played football during his tenure at Stanford. Next time I will have to let my daughter fend for herself and go to the game.
POST GAME BY THE NUMBERS
Steven Jackson was once again the horse for the Beavers. Jackson rushed for 230 yards on 35 carries. Of those 230 yards, 165 yards came in the second half. Two big runs of 58 yards for a TD and one of 70 yards were big plays that turned the game around for the Beavers. The 230 yards put Jackson at 1503 yards for the season and only 57 yards from Ken Simonton's single season rushing record. Cole Clasen and Tim Euhus had great receiving games. Clasen had 6 catches for 57 yards and Euhus had 4 catches for 94 yards. James Newson had 3 catches for 87 yards. One going for 46 yards and a touchdown. Derek Anderson struggled for most of the game again this week and his numbers were not any better then last week except in the area of interventions. He only had one in the game and that was a pass that should have been caught that went right through the hands of Farley and into the hands of a Stanford DB. But Derek put together some great throws at the right time to end the day 17 of 41 for 290 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. His one touchdown ties him with Jonathan Smith with 20 TD's this season. A school record. Kirk Yliniemi was 3 for 3 in field goals for the Beavers pushing his streak to 12 in a row this season, setting a school record. NEXT UP The Beavers now must prepare for the Ducks who are coming off a big loss to the rebounding Huskies. I hope the Cougars are paying attention over in Pullman. The Huskies are playing pretty well right now. IT'S CIVIL WAR WEEK. IT IS TIME TO TALK SOME TRASH AND FLAG YOUR FLAGS. WEAR YOUR ORANGE ALL WEEK. The Beavers and the Ducks come into this game with identical records of 3-4 in conference and 7-4 overall. It looks to be a great game. If momentum has anything to do in the outcome of a game, the Beavers have to have the edge. The Beavers are 3-1 in their last 4 games. The Ducks are 1-4 in their last 5 games. So the stage is set. The party is almost here. It's Civil War week, where friends become enemies and houses are divided (NOT IN THIS HOUSE, ITS ORANGE OR YOUR OUT). So lets all have a great week and kick the tail feathers off those Ducks on Saturday. CONTEST RESULTS Here is what is going on. One Dog is giving away pairs of NYX Sunglasses over the next three weeks to members of our mailing list. This weeks winner ......
