2002 Football OSU vs Oregon BEAVERS WIN THE CIVIL WAR IN A BIG WAY BEATING THE DUCKS 45-24 HOW ABOUT THOSE BEAVERS! HOW ABOUT THOSE FANS! IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A BEAVER! What an experience the whole day was. The weather was perfect for football in mid November. The temperature was in the mid fifties and the skies were overcast. The pregame tailgater was lots of fun. Discussing the possibilities for the game, listening to the pregame show on the radio, scamming as much FREE coffee from those Starbucks people as we could. You see, to maintain proper etiquette, we do not drink any beer before eleven A.M. Eleven is when lunch starts for many people and we can justify having a beer or two or three once 11 rolls around. By the way, does anyone know who owns that very large corporate jet that flew over about an hour before the game? Someone named Knight probably. Anyway, having been properly motivated at a successful tailgater before the game, we managed to make into the stadium just before kickoff. The lines to the men's restrooms were a mile long. I hope they add more when they expand the stadium. So knowing I would miss nothing during the Ducks first possession I used that time to beat the line in the restroom and at the same time give the play by play to the crowd from my radio. I love the Civil War game because it is the only game all season that know one sits during the entire game. I think I sat down only during TV timeouts. Stand, Scream, Rest, Stand, Scream, Rest. That is the pattern for the game with only halftime to breakup the rhythm. It was so loud in Reser that in order to hear my headset radio to get the call from Mike Parker I had to place my hands over my ears and strain to listen, even with the volume all the way up. This was even more evident after the game and the basketball game when returning to the car in the quiet of the evening. The headset was hanging from my shoulders and we could both listen to the postgame report very clearly. And I had turned down the volume from earlier. The game was great. The Beavers showed the early season form that propelled them to 4-0. The first half was full of fireworks with lots of big plays. After field goals by each team the Beavers scored the first TD on a 16 yard run by Steven Jackson and then added on another with a 65 yard TD pass to Steven Jackson to take a 17-3 lead. The Ducks came right back with a 84 TD pass to Howry on a scoring drive that was actually shorter then the TD pass thanks to penalties at the start of the drive. The Ducks then got the ball back in great field position and went 36 yards in 5 plays to tie the game at 17 with 3:14 left in the half. After an exchange of punts the Beavers got the ball back in great field position with less than 1 minute to play and went 38 yards for the TD to take the 24-17 lead at the half. The second half was all Oregon State as the Beaver defense completely dominated the Ducks. The Beaver defense shut out the Ducks in the second half allowing only the punt return for a TD by Howry. The Beaver defense held the Ducks to 65 yards under their season average on offense. The Beaver offense put up 21 second half points to ice the game and send the feather fowl home for the season. On offense it was a record setting day for several Beaver players and the team. The 45 points scored by the Beavers was the most ever by an OSU team in a Civil War. It was the largest margin of victory for the Beavers since 1968. Derek Anderson had his best game of the season at just the right time, going 21-37 for 370 yards and 4 TD's with no interceptions. Anderson also set the single season record for touchdown passes with 24 on the season. Steven Jackson set the single season rushing record, breaking Ken Simontons record, by rushing for 153 yards on the day and 1,656 for the season. James Newson caught 11 passes for 168 yards (11 catches is a record) and finished the game with 1,119 yards receiving on the season, also a record. The dark side of the game was the penalties. Both teams had over 100 yards in penalties for the game (Oregon 13 for 105, OSU 10 for 107). Dennis Erickson said that last year he reigned in his players to cut down on penalties and it resulted in his first losing season in 17 years so he will not do that again.
