2002 Football Bowlgame Special 1

WHAT A MESS!! HERE IT IS DECEMBER 1ST AND WE STILL DON'T KNOW

The game on Friday between ASU and Arizona put one tumbler into place and the game last night between USC and Notre Dame put another into place.

The Arizona State win over Arizona on Friday hurt the beavers chances and eliminated one bowl possibility. The Holiday Bowl is now out for sure. Arizona State will finish the season no lower then third place.

The USC win over Notre Dame on Saturday night could help the Beavers chances. USC will now move up in the BCS and could possibly make a BCS bowl game even if Washington State beats UCLA next weekend. The Washington State game is the big game. Pretty much all the bowl placements for the PAC-10 conference depend upon what happens in that game.

Another factor from this weekends game that plays into this was the loss of Oklahoma to Oklahoma State. Oklahoma's loss along with the Notre Dame loss to USC will move teams up in the rankings. USC should move up to at least #5 and maybe #4 in the BCS on strength of schedule. USC has the toughest schedule in the nation right now and they will need WSU to win next week to keep it that strong.

The Washington State vs UCLA game next week has bowl implications not only for the PAC-10 but for many other teams around the country trying to make a BCS bowl. If WSU wins, they will go to the Rose Bowl. Then USC will most likely make a BCS bowl game on the strength of their rankings. Most likely the Orange Bowl, possibly the Sugar Bowl.

If that happens then you have the trickle down affect in the conference. The rules state that if the top two teams in the conference go to a BCS bowl then the holiday bowl can choose whomever they like. But since ASU is a solid third in conference they would most likely go. Then you would have the remaining teams battling for the remaining bowl games with a three way tie for 4th place in the conference.

ESPN has Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl and USC in the Holiday Bowl. They also have Oregon in the Seattle Bowl, The Huskies in the Insight.com Bowl and Oregon State in Las Vegas. In going through the ESPN predictions I found them very wrong.

Having spent two days in Seattle over Thanksgiving, I know that all the Seattle news organizations are saying the Huskies will be in Las Vegas. That would put the Beavers in Phoenix or San Jose.

I think the Beavers are a better pick for any bowl game then the Huskies. After what they brought to Tempe in 2000, insight will be looking hard at the Beavers. The Beavers also have two big reasons to be picked - Dennis Erickson, seventh on the all time wins list and Steven Jackson, the PAC-10's leading rusher.

The bottom line is that no one will know for sure until the WSU - UCLA game and then if WSU wins that game, no one will know until the BCS picks its teams.
