2001 Football OSU vs Oregon

NOT JUST ANOTHER GAME, IT'S A WAR! (LET'S TALK SOME TRASH)

Its game time again! This weeks opponent for the Beavers is the Ducks of Oregon. Yep, The Ducks. Those most hated feathered fowl from that strange town down the valley. Now depending upon your own personal situation, you may not hate the Ducks. You may only think of them as another Oregon school that you should support to help build up the state and make  things better for the rest of us.

WRONG!, WRONG!, WRONG!

Let me make one thing perfectly clear to all who read this. WE HATE THE DUCKS! HATE, HATE, HATE! Who can respect any school or team that has a Disney character for a mascot. Now I know you are trying to rid yourselves of the Disney stigma and that's good. But what have you gone to? A pregnant O that looks like a reject from a Crispy Cream production line. Why don't you just rename the school "Phil Knight University". After all Phil and "Nike" provide you with everything you need. You could have a big swoosh on your helmets and not have to worry about designing another stupid looking Duck logo.

Now we all know that you Duckies are having another, and yes I say another great season. I, as a Beaver Fan and as a football fan, do admit that the Duckies have done a good job at building a good program over the last ten years and that you have become a solid power in the PAC-10  and the nation. However, that by no means changes my opinion of you. I hated you when you sucked and I hate you still. Just be warned, that there is another school up the valley from you that kicked your butt last year and plans on doing the same thing to it again this year. We may not have had the same success that you have the last ten years but I believe that we will soon be looking down at the Duckies from much loftier perches.

The Beavers are the states favorite team. The Ducks are the team that everyone loves to hate. I often ask people why they like the Ducks. The most common answer is "I don't know". Did you go to school there? "No". Then why? "I don't know, I root for the Beavers when they win". A true fan!! Whoever is winning more games, that is who I root for.

Most if not all of the Beaver fans I know have been rooting for the Beavers for decades. They have ties to the school. They are loyal to the school. And there are a lot more of us then you.

Win or lose this weekend I will still hate the Ducks. But the best part is that we will win and the Duckies will have to lick their wounds for another year.

GO BEAVS!

GAME 11 The Civil War!

It's Civil War week and it's time to break down the game. This weeks game, for those living in a cave, is the University of Oregon Ducks. This will be the 105th meeting between the two schools. Oregon leads the series 52-42-10. The Beavers currently have a one-game winning streak as a result of winning 23-13 at Reser Stadium last year. The victory by OSU left the Beavers, Ducks and Washington in a three-way tie for the Pacific-10 Conference championship. Oregon State has a two-game winning streak over Oregon at Reser Stadium. The Ducks have a three-game winning streak over the Beavers at Autzen Stadium. OSU last won at Autzen in 1993 by a score of 15-12. The Beavers lost 12-10 at Autzen in 1995, 48-30 in 1997 and 23-17 in 1999, Erickson's first year at OSU.

The Beavers go into this game with a record of 5-5 and hopes of making it to post season play. Things to watch for in this game. Ken Simonton needs 113 yards rushing to get to 1,000 yards on the season and become the first player in PAC-10 history and the fifth player in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards in all four years of eligibility. Oregon's Joey Harrington still has an outside chance at winning the Heisman Trophy but will need a big game to sway the voters.

IN THE POLLS

Oregon State is currently ranked 48th in the CBS Sportsline Top 117 poll. Oregon is ranked 4th in the same poll, 4th in the AP, and 5th in the Coaches. This weeks BCS poll comes out later today. The Ducks should be 4th or 5th in this weeks BCS poll.

The Beavers have won 3 of their last 4 games and 2 in a row. They could have won the game they lost at USC, missing a field goal with 33 seconds in regulation to win. The Beavers are playing well right now, scoring 94 points in their last two games while holding their opponents to 34. The Ducks have won 3 in a row after losing at home to Stanford.

17 OREGON STATE SENIORS IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAME

A total of 17 Oregon State seniors will be playing in their final regular season game for the Beavers' in this year's Civil War game. This group of seniors has enjoyed great success at Oregon State. This group has played on Beaver teams with a combined 28-17 record (.622) heading into the Civil War. OSU was 5-6 in 1998, 7-5 in 1999, 11-1 last year and presently 5-5.

With a win over the Ducks this Saturday, the senior class will have three wins over the Ducks for their career.

A GOOD OMEN

This past weekend produced two upset victories by the other two Division 1A schools called OSU-Ohio State University and Oklahoma State University. First, Ohio State invaded Ann Arbor, Michigan and upset No. 11 Michigan 26-20. Following the first upset, Oklahoma State visited Norman, Oklahoma to shock the No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners by 16-13. This week, the third OSU-Oregon State University-visits Eugene to meet No. 4 Oregon.

The Ducks are one of the top teams in the country this season. They have a powerful offense that puts up a lot of points. The By the Numbers Scoreboard shows the dominance the Ducks have over the Beavers in all but a few categories. However, their defense has been vulnerable to the pass this season, giving up an average of 288.50 ypg. The Beavers have been playing strong the last two games, crushing then #8 Washington 49-24. The Beavers held the Huskies to 88 yards rushing and 190 yards passing.

THE BOTTOM LINE

For the Beavers to win this game two things must happen. The Beavers defense needs to continue to play the way it has the last two games, holding teams under 300 yards total offense. Then the offense needs to produce. The Ducks will put points on the board, that is not a question. The key is for the Beavers to minimize the damage while providing some fireworks of their own.

We all know the history of this game and how you can throw the numbers out the window when it comes to this game. Both teams will be fired up for the game. The Ducks have revenge on their minds, a shot at a national championship on the line and a chance for the best regular season record in school history. The Beavers have a chance to make it to post season for the third straight season, have a winning record and send the seniors out in style. Dennis Erickson only 1 losing season in his college coaching career. It will be a great game.

I look for the Beavers to once again defy the numbers and come out with a victory. Final score Beavers 35 - Ducks 27.
