2001 Football OSU vs Northern Arizona This week as I have been preparing to put this newsletter together, I have read a lot of material on the Beavers and our opponent this week, the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. In the middle of trying to will my team onto another victory and a chance at a winning record and going to another bowl game. In the middle of all the stats, photos, AP reports, websites and sitting among lots of Beaver memorabilia. I was reminded today, that tomorrow is the end of an era at Oregon State. After tomorrows game we will no longer be able to sit in Reser stadium and cheer for Jonathan, Kenny, Patrick, Jake, James, Chris, Vincent and many others. Tomorrow, the senior class makes its last appearance at home. These players have a been major part of the biggest turnaround in college football. After 28 straight losing seasons, they won. Then to do that one better, the next season all they did was to go out and put together the best season in school history. For those of us who have been with the Beavers since the Johnson administration. This run of football the last four years has been something to cherish and hold close to your heart. We should have all known something was going to happen. That civil war game on November 21, 1998 was one of the greatest football games I have ever seen. I lost my voice for 10 days after that game. It also sparked a long nearly dead fire in my sole that the Beavers were on their way back. The next two seasons were a wild ride with many ups and downs. But these players provided us with something we will never forget. The jerseys, photos, signatures and newspaper articles that adorn my office walls are a testimony to what we all have experienced the last four years. We all would say before this, "Remember when the Beavers were good at football?". Now we only have to look at the present and enjoy the time we have. "The Time is Now" for us as fans of the Beavers, to go out tomorrow and let these young men know how much they have given us over this time, how much it has meant to us, and sent them out of Reser stadium tomorrow with a victory. I for one, will miss them all. GO BEAVS! GAME 10 Its game time again! This weeks opponent for the Beavers is the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University. This is the first time a Northern Arizona team has played a Pac-10 team since 1950. And it is the first meeting between both schools. The Beavers go into this game with another chance to get back to .500 for the season and keep their post season hopes alive. Things to watch for in this game. Ken Simonton needs 264 yards rushing to get to 1,000 yards on the season and Jonathan Smith needs 247 yards passing to become OSU's career passing leader and 203 yards to pass John Elway and become 4th on the PAC-10 career passing yards list.
ERICKSON IN NOVEMBER Dennis Erickson is in his 16th year as a collegiate head coach. He has compiled an impressive record during the month of November. In the month of November he currently has a career mark of 43-10-1, a percentage of .806. Erickson is 6-2 (.750) in November as Oregon State's head coach. THE POLLS The Beavers have moved up in the CBS top 117 poll to 50th this week after dropping the week before to 53rd (Notre Dame is 49th). BY THE NUMBERS (PREGAME) NAU finished their conference schedule last week against Sacramento State. NAU is currently 8-2 on the season with their two losses coming against National Champion Montana and Portland State University. NAU is a good team and is averaging 35.8 points per game. Offensive players to watch are running back Marcus King and receiver Clarence Moore. King has rushed for 1306 yards this season and Moore has caught 42 balls for 635 yards. NAU will test the Beavers defense and will stretch the field on the Beavers. The game may very well be decided on the ground with NAU rushing the ball for over 200 yards per game while holding their opponents to just 101 yards per game. NAU is also good at getting the ball with a turnover ratio of +8 while the Beavers are -4. NAU has also proven that they can score on the road averaging more points on the road then at home this season. THE BOTTOM LINE The Beavers cannot be lazy in this game or they can lose. The defense has to perform at the same level they did last week against Washington and the offence has got to show up again. NAU gives up lots of points on defense and counts on their offence to outscore the other team. For the Beavers to win it will take a solid defensive effort and lots of points from the offence. NAU holds the ball longer then their opponents and converts almost 50% of third down conversions. They are a ball control offense that looks for the big play. Their longest play from scrimmage is 61 yards, but many players have plays of over 40 this season. I look for the Beavers to once again defy the numbers and come out with a solid effort for the seniors. Final score OSU 56- NAU 28 Be sure to check out our Beaver Fan Site at www.onedogsports.com/beavers and let me know what you think. I will be updating it today with current news and extras. GO BEAVS!
